Essential oils are a type of volatile oil that is extracted from a plant. Usually distilled, the oil is drawn out of a single species of flora, retaining its scent, flavor, and often color. The distillation and use of these oils is an ancient practice.

Essential oils are often used in various body care products, adding their scents to cosmetics, soaps, and perfumes. Many of the edible oils are used to flavor candies, baked goods, and beverages. They are also common in savory or brined goods, including meats and pickles.

These distilled oils are also found in some medicines and wellness products. They are very common in commercial dental products, as well as an assortment of ointments and creams.

Many people use essential oils for aromatherapy, or to impact their mood. Lavender is used to relieve stress, while those who seek spiritual awareness sometimes use oil of frankincense.
