Developing a Syllabus for College Students

I) Course information. A syllabus clearly outlines the title of the course, course number, and credit hours. It states the location where the classes will be held, their dates, and time. It also gives details including the course instructor’s name, title, and contact information.

II) Reading materials. It is also important to include comprehensive information on textbooks and supplementary reading materials students will find helpful. For each item, the syllabus should indicate the name of the author, title, date of publication, publisher, and purchase cost.

III) Course description. The syllabus should provide a general overview of the course that outlines its general content, why it is important, its objectives, and what students will be expected to know at the end of the course.

IV) Course calendar. The document’s calendar will contain a schedule of the topics to be covered alongside the dates they will be covered. It also includes dates for exams, assignments, and quizzes. Where these three are present, it is advisable to include a grading formula as a reference point for students.
